The Turnaround

When Ispat took control of Imexsa in January 1992, the steel industry was in the midst of a global recession. Ispat had to briefly shut down the furnaces because "there were no orders for the steel and no place to store the finished slabs". Despite the shut-down, Imexsa laid off only 70 employees-30 fewer than the agreed-upon limit. It later went on to hire 270 employees...

Looking Ahead

In the late 1980s and early 1990s, Mittal had grown from a single-site wire-rod producer on the fringes of the Asian market to a leading multinational steelmaker. By 1996, Ispat was producing 8.8 million tons of crude steel and 4.6 million tons of DRI. The 14th-largest steelmaker in the world, he had been chosen steelmaker of the Year for 1996...
